Alto

With a very tight deadline and excellent teamwork, Alto was created as an app that uses music to better the emotional well-being of users. It does so by calculating user's current mood and music preferences in order to create a playlist catered to improving their overall mood while travelling or exploring the city.

my role

Throughout the hackathon, I was in charge of project/team management, research, persona development, logo design, prototyping and wireframing. I made sure our team stayed on track and that we all had equal designated responsibilities.

challenge

What innovations and technologies will enhance our culture and wellbeing? What role can music, data and technology play in ensuring connection and day-to-day happiness in a smart city?

overview

In response to a citywide cultural shift, into a more modern and smarter era, we need to improve and optimize our human experiences with smart technologies that interact with the city. As our population increases, and our cities become smart cities, we need to both adapt and align our daily experiences to be in tune with our emotions.

As you travel through Toronto, you should feel the way you want to feel, having your music react and having Toronto adapt to the community’s mood. With music we can embrace and improve our lives and reach the moods that we want during our daily routines.

solution

Create an app that understands and infers your current mood and seeks to brighten your experiences as you move through your daily routine with a unique and personalized music playlist, that's tailored towards your idealized mood.

What Alto Does:

1. Alto is able to populate a persons journey with a correspondent playlist, harmonized to their mood and elevate it to their target mood by using personalized metadata, biometrics or their manual input of their current and target mood in a specific time frame (such as their route to work through google map).

2. The more user explores app, the more they can unlock additional events and options. You can explore new songs, hear your favorite genres, and get closer to your ideal mood during your idle time. This exploration will benefit the listener and the artists at the same time.

3.  Alto can be found in different hotspots all over the city. These hotspots gather the general data of the visitors in that area, allowing cities like that of Toronto to get a better understanding of how certain areas specific to that city are affecting their citizens emotionally and how they can improve the area overall.

4. Creates a network in a sense that users can see where other people are as well as how they are feeling in a certain time and connect.

process

With a limited time span, we fleshed out our idea by brainstorming using CPS tools using convergent and divergent thinking to establish a clear challenge and solution. After ideating and researching, we began creating our wireframes and personas to get a better understanding of our target audiences. Here are two of the personas we created and the sketches we made while developing alto.

Future Implementations

As a group, we collectively generated a plethora of ideas throughout the process of creating Alto that we could potentially add on. With further development, we would love to include the following features:

  • Celebrity Endorsements and Big company inclusions and partners against compensation.
  • Exclusive events (Raves) that are given to people that have the app. And then things can be sold at those events.
  • Based on certain locations, users can get historical and/or significant music played on a notification
  • Accessibility Settings include: Colour blind mode, lyrics mode, as well as the “vibration hard of hearing mode” that uses more dramaticized lights and mimics the song’s composition using vibrations so that everyone can experience the music.
  • A Point system: for every step a user takes, they generate “points” to unlock other features or songs
  • An accelerometer feature that can help keep track of speed and steps so that users can’t “trick” their way through not walking or biking.
